Message :I have a 91TT that keeps getting hot. I have an after-market gauge hooked up in place of the factory one, and under normal driving conditions around town, the water temp stays at 180. When cruising down the highway around 75 MPH, for a prolonged amount of time, the coolant temp rises to around 235 and continues to climb. If I slow the car down to 60 MPH, which is just below 2500 RPM, and turn the heat on, I can get the temp to drop down to around 210. It will then cycle between 210 and 235-240 every few minutes. I am not very familiar with the ranges for temp, but in past vehicles I've owned, the coolant temp stays constant once the thermostat is opened. The car has a new water pump, new thermostat, and I have bled the system several times by jacking up the front of the car and running it with a spill-free funnel attached. I have also tested for a blown head gasket with a leak detector. The only thing that I can think of is an airflow issue, or a blockage in the radiator. Car has OEM fan and shroud, and fan seems to engage properly. I also removed the radiator and flushed it with water and there seemed to be no flow issues. There is no debris trapped between condenser and radiator either, but I have not tried blowing out the fins on them yet. Any suggestions, or is this something that is normal?

I had the same problem and it was my viscous fan coupler going out itermitantly; $200 for a new one and the problem was fixed.
